Sashiko 刺し子 (traditional hand stitching or quilting used as reinforcement and decoration) fireman's gloves. Tsutsugaki 筒描 (resist dye technique) cotton, several layers thick, quilted together to create a tough material that can hold a lot of moisture.   This pair was made from recycled fireman's jacket material.   This was considered auspicious.   If a fireman was lucky enough to live until retirement his coat was often cut up and made into other items for other members of his crew with the hope of bringing his experience to them in their work.
