Japanese Sledge-Hauling Vest (Sorihiki Banten) patchwork of indigo dyed cotton very finely sashiko quilted togetherĀ to create a beautiful farmer's vest.Ā Ā In condition consistent with its use, reinforced and patched to accommodate the rope that crossed the body from shoulder to waist while hauling a sled, cart or boat.Ā The reinforced band on the shoulder has a stitching pattern that appears to be purely geometric but is known as kaki no hana (persimmon flower) because it resembles the concentric arrangement of the four sepals and four petals of the persimmon blossom. The economy of the Shonai farmers is apparent in this work vest, which was assembled from many different fabrics
