Antique Lacquered Wood Daruma Mold
This mold was used to create paper mache daruma (達磨 'tumbling doll'), a decorative figure made in the image of the Bodhidharma that is intended to bring good luck. This mold would have been covered in paper mache then cut from the forehead to the back and removed from the mold. The seam would be covered and some weight added to the base. The doll would then be painted but the iris of the eye was left blank. One would make a wish and add one iris. The daruma doll was then expected to grant that wish before the second iris is painted in.
