Artist Biography
Matsuo Heizaburo (1751-1803) was a town painter from the Kamigata region who also went by the artist name Nichosai. He learned painting fromĀ Koshiba Hayato and produced many prints, picture books, and hand-painted drawings from the Anāei Period (1772-81) to the Kansei Period (1789-1801). Nichosai excelled in humorous and unique paintings with rough brush drawn caricatures andĀ was also a pioneer in portraits of Kamigata actors.
